The Jerusalem cross, also known as the Crusaders cross, was the symbol of the Templar - Crusader kingdom of Jerusalem, established in 1098 under the leadership of Godfrey de Bouillon, duke of Lower-Lorraine.

The large, center cross represents Christ and Jerusalem as the center of spiritualism. The four smaller crosses symbolize the four books of the Gospel and the four directions in which the Word of Christ spread from the holy city through evangelists Mathew, mark, Luke, and John. Alternately, all five crosses symbolize the five wounds of Christ during the Passion.
